Behind the News

Science Week

Grade 3/4’s has been writing and watching B.T.N, which stands for Behind The News. One of the episodes we have watched talked about Science Week. Primary school students Ella and Gigi from another school were investigating as to why onions make you cry. Another student, William also had an investigation as to why is seaweed brown.

Our Grade 3/4 class loves watching BTN and if you too would like to find out these answers then visit our Grade 3/4 Wiki and select the 3rd term B.T.N. and click on the website.

Pentathlon

The grade 3/4s have been watching a show for kids called BTN (Behind The News.) The episode I liked the most was the Pentathlon Siblings – Episode #22. It was about a brother and sisters, who are both athletes wishing to compete in the 2016 Olympics.

They wanted to compete for a sport called pentathlon, events that are necessary for soldier to enlist in the army. The events include running, swimming, shooting, horse riding and fencing. The brother and sister are really good at it.

Following this we had to answer five questions after we had watched it working with a partners. The people who had the best work had it copied onto the quality work wall.

Hiroshima

This term the grade ¾ has been watching BTN. It is a website about the worlds news for kids and it is a very friendly website for kids.

In third week of BTN we watched news about 70th anniversary of the first nuclear bomb attacked in Japan in Hiroshima, which was in World War II. It also old told us about a little girl who experienced the 1st nuclear bomb. Her name was Sadako.

Living Things

Is it a living thing?

The activity ‘Is it a Living thing?’ required us to classify living and non-living things. We made a poster of non-living and living things based on their characteristics. We classified these items as:

  • Does it move?
  • Does it grow?
  • Does it respire?

What we learnt: From this activity we learnt that items we first thought were non-living were in fact once living. For example, a wooden table was once living because it originated from a tree. This activity also taught us new words and their meanings such as respire.

In this activity we had to work in pairs and to use the '4Cs':

  1. Communication
  2. Collaboration
  3. Creativity
  4. Critical Thinking
My partner and I achieved this by taking turns and listening to each other’s ideas.

What I enjoyed: I enjoyed working in pairs because we got to work with our friends and work collaboratively. I also enjoyed thinking about and creating our own living and non-living things. Decorating and colouring in our poster was very enjoyable. I enjoyed that our work got put up around the classroom for every one to see.

Netball Tournament By Jaimie

Last Thursday a group of students in grade 3/4 and 5/6 competed in a netball tournament in Parkville at the Netball Centre. We competed against seven other schools from all around Melbourne. The first game we drew, the second game we won, the next four games we lost and in our last game we drew.

For the first few games our team played on the surrounding outside courts. It was wet and it was cold - a few of the students on both teams slipped. After the first few games we moved to the inside courts where it was much warmer and drier.

My position was Goal Defence (GD), the job is to defend the Goal Attack (GA) from scoring goals. I also played Centre (C) where I had to make sure the ball moved towards our end. I swapped with my sister every half so we could learn different netball positions and skills.

It was so much fun but really tiring. I liked learning netball skills from the older students and my coach.
